Meteora is a large rock home to breathtaking monasteries who Situated in the center of Greece. Is one of the most special place in Greece.!!! Meteora in Greek means “place suspended in the air”, a phrase that explains perfectly what this site is. Meteora is a group of large sandstone rocks that were formed below the sea level over 30 million years ago. This fascinating formation chiseled throughout the centuries was made visible when the seabed was pushed upwards. Meteora is not only famous for its large slabs; what makes it even more fascinating are the various monasteries that were built on top of its peaks. The height of the rocks and its impressive views were the reason why many monks believed that these monasteries were the best place to meditate. Nowadays, thirteen monasteries, out of the initial twenty-four, are still standing. Six of these are open to the public. The first cloister, the Great Meteoron Monastery, was founded in 1336 by Saint Athanasios Meteorites. The abbey crowns a 536-meter rock. At the entrance of the monastery, is a cave where the monk Athanasios first dwelled. How the various monasteries were built still remains a mystery, although there are several theories, including one of the most popular that relates that the stones were brought up by comets. Until paths and a road were built, the only way to climb to the top of Meteora was by ropes, pulleys and chairlifts.

Your private tour will start from your hotel in Athens and head to the central mainland of Greece. The first stop is the battlefield of Thermopylae and the "Hot Gates" named after the hot springs there. Here is where King Leonidas and 300 brave Spartans gave their lives for the freedom of Greece.
Pass by Trikala, Karditsa, Kalambaka and Kastraki, before finally reaching the Meteora monasteries. They come second in religious importance and size after Mount Athos in orthodox Christianity. Meteora means "middle of the sky", and the monasteries are built on high pillars at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly, near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains. There are still monks and nuns inhabiting them today.
You will visit up to 3 monasteries, depending on what time allows before having a memorable Greek lunch. You'll eat at a traditional tavern in Kalambaka or Kastraki where you'll have plenty of choice of Greek dishes to choose from.
On your way back to Athens, stop at Thermopylae, where one of most epic battles of all times took place. 300 Spartans faced the Persian army and stopped them for 2 days. See the battlefield and the statue of King Leonidas.
