The Cycladic civilization
The world-famous Cycladic civilization flourished during the Early Bronze Age, around 3000 BC. The Cyclades, advantageously positioned in the centre of the Aegean Sea, between the East and the West, with their rich in volcanic rocks terrain and the strong winds, have gained power thank to trade and maritime activity. The same period marked the birth of Cycladic art, with its most distinctive samples being the marble figures known as Cycladic idols. These were mostly colour-painted naked naked female figures with their arms folder on the belly.
According to mythology, the Cyclades were created when Poseidon, god of the sea, became enraged with the Cyclades nymphs and turned them into rocks. A different version of the story claims that the name comes from the islands forming a circle(in Greek Kyklos) around the sacred island Delos, the place of birth of god Apollo. Variations of such stories and legends are very common across all the Cycladic islands. These are tales of adventure, full of gods and heroes, mythological monsters and giants, stories of love, wrath and revenge!
Cycladic Folk Art & Architecture
Discover products of arts and crafts made by anonymous creators influenced by local customs, traditions and everyday habits of the islanders: tools, furniture, commonly used and agricultural utensils, garments, textiles and so on.
